MOUNTAIN biking and sailing enthusiast Stephen Birkby died on Saturday, February 21. Stephen, 40, leaves behind partner Liz Akerstrom and her sons, Sam and Tom as well as parents Joanna and Michael and brothers Andrew, Matthew and Nicholas. Stephen had a heart attack while mountain biking with friends in Long Mynd, Shropshire. Those who cared for him said he died doing something he loved.

GRANDMOTHER-of-four Catherine Lennon died on Tuesday, March 3. Catherine, 88, leaves behind three sons, Dennis, Kevin and Mick and grandchildren Amy, Jack. Kate and Rosie. Catherine's family said she will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. Animal-lover Catherine, of Tarleton, was hit by a reversing car near to the junction of Union Street and Castle Street in Southport on Friday, February 13 and later died due to a complication with her injuries.

Remembering John Arrowsmith

WOODVALE Rally founder and managing director John Arrowsmith died on Thursday, February 12. John, 83, leaves behind wife Betty and children Lesley, Colin, Derek and Mary. He worked as a hydraulic engineer for Lucas Aerospace in Liverpool where he became involved with the 281 Southport squadron, the 1026 Ormskirk squadron and the scouting movement. He was one of the founding members of the Woodvale Rally and colleagues described his commitment to the event as enormous. During his time with the air training corps Mr Arrowsmith was commissioned in to the RAF VR (T) and achieved the rank of flight lieutenant, training. He also served Southport as a magistrate for several years.

WALSH, SHEILA - 20th January 2009, ROMANTIC novelist Sheila Walsh died on Tuesday, January 20. She leaves behind husband Des and daughters Tess and Fran. Southport's Writers' Circle president and founding member Sheila had a successful writing career winning the RNA Netta Muskett Award for New Writers in 1973 with her first novel, The Golden Songbird. The former vice-president of the British Romantic Novelists' Association was also a member of Southport Soroptimists and St Mary's Church.

Ron, 66, leaves behind wife Margaret, children Jayne and Jonathan, grandchildren Lee, Charlotte, Rachael, Lewis, Mia, Joshua and Amelia and great-grandson Kaylem. Former Kingsway Club manager, Ron was well-known for booking international artists including Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdink. KIRWAN, CHRISSIE - 23rd January 2009, FORMER Mayor of Sefton Chrissie Kirwan died on Friday, January 23. Chrissie, 92, leaves behind loving nieces and nephews after husband Fred died. Through her life, she was involved in many charities and became governor at several Ainsdale schools. Chrissie served on bodies including North Regional Committee for the Blind, Southport Committee for the Deaf and Consolidate Charities of Thomas Brown and Marsh Doyle, Formby.

MORE-O'FARRELL, TIM - 31st December 2008, SOUTHPORT Rugby Club player and chef Tim O'Farrell died on Wednesday, December 31. Tim, 46, who played as a hooker, leaves behind a wife Christine and son Daniel. He was a keen Chelsea FC supporter and enjoyed walking his German pointers, Kai and Mia, around Southport. CAFFERKEY, TONY - 28th January 2009, HOTELIER and Southport ambassador Tony Cafferkey died on Wednesday, January 28. Tony, 60, leaves behind a daughter Nichola and wife Sylvia. Tony was managing director at the Scarisbrick Hotel as well as holding roles on tourism boards and Southport Flowershow. NOONEY KATHLEEN - 20th January 2009, WOMEN'S campaigner and seamstress Kathleen Nooney died on Tuesday, January 20. Kathleen, 106, who was married to James, leaves behind four nieces. She was the first housekeeper at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, when it opened over 50 years ago and friends described her as fiercely independent attending Mass every day. Peter, 70, leaves behind many friends including Southport FC fans at Haig Avenue. Peter died on his 70th birthday for which friends had organised a party. SWINDLEHURST JASON - Skelmersdale dad Jason Swindlehurst died after being taken hostage in Iraq. Jason leaves behind daughter Jaye, parents Marie and Russell, sister Lizzette and brother Clint. The security guard from Skelmersdale was taken captive in May 2007 by 40 armed men wearing police uniforms at the Iraqi Finance Ministry in Baghdad. Leave your tributes to Jason below.

DANCING queen Emma Hilton died on Monday, December 1.

Emma, 18, who died from pneumonia, leaves behind mum Lorraine and triplet sisters, Claire and Victoria.

Former West Lancashire Community High School pupil Emma was known for her bubbly personality and love of dancing.

She adored the film Mamma Mia and her favourite Abba song, Dancing Queen, played at her funeral. Leave your tributes to Emma below.

Remembering Mal Wright

Retired police officer Mal Wright lived life to the full and was known as 'dad' to many.

The father-of-three, 69, from Hartdale Road, walked the paths and fields of the area almost every day for 40 years.

As a talented gardener and proud royalist, Mal had a Union Jack in his back garden, which his son Charles flew at half mast when his father passed away after losing his battle with cancer.

He also leaves behind his wife Sylvia, 65, daughters Julia, 45, and Fiona, 42, along with his six grandchildren.

Cyril Johnson

Cyril Johnson ran the Northern Equitation Centre in Aughton, near Ormskirk. During a career spanning more than 60 years he became one of the most influential and popular teachers of horsemanship in the United Kingdom and competed at a high level in showjumping and eventing, and in later life had a real passion for dressage.

Lt Cmdr Thomas Kenneth Griffiths, of the Sefton Sea Cadets, died in hospital after battling cancer for three years. More than 400 people packed out St Philips Church in Litherland for his funeral service showing just how loved the great-grandfather was. Ken, as he was known to friends, of Middlesex Road, Bootle was originally diagnosed with cancer of the prostate three years ago but took ill again in October 2008 and the illness eventually spread to his bones. The 79-year-old joined the navy in 1947 and served until 1955 when he left to work for Ribble, the bus company now owned by Arriva. Ken spent 38 years - nearly half of his life - with the Sea Cadet Corps and commanded the Sefton Unit, TS Starling, until his retirement in 1994. However, he continued to look after the new cadets and despite his ill health, still visited the unit until he was admitted to hospital.

This is a Book of Remembrance that has been specially commissioned by the Southport Visiter to commemorate Remembrance Day in memory of all those who died in the two World Wars and all subsequent wars and conflicts. Each year, at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we will remember them. Once known as Armistice Day it was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War but of course to many of us it is simply known as Poppy Day. November is poppy month, the time of the year when by the wearing of a simple emblem, a red poppy, we salute the memory of those who sacrificed their health, their strength, even their lives, that we might live in a free country. If you would like to leave a message in memory of those who died, please do so. Royal Marine, Corporal Liam Elms, 26, from Wrightington lost his life in an explosion in Southern Helmand in Afghanistan while on operations with 45 Commando Royal Marines on New Years Eve. The popular former St Josephs Primary School pupil's funural was held at St Josephs Church, Wrightington. Corporal Elms had played junior rugby for Wigan St Patricks and the Wigan town team and had been selected to box for England at junior level. He leaves behind his mum Maureen, brother Ryan and sister Rachael. He was engaged to Jessica Deans.

Remembering Ken Sims

Ken Sims, 86, who was secretary of the Telegraphist Air Gunners (TAG) Association, passed away at Southport hospital after developing a stomach tumour.

The widower lost his wife Eileen nine years ago and leaves his daughter Maureen Fear, his grandchildren as well as great- grandchildren.

Ken was born in Fulham and served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, where he trained as a telegraphist air gunner in 1939.

Among his duties were air gunnery, communicating by radio using Morse code and from the aircraft to ships by Aldis Lamp.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for participating in torpedo attacks against enemy ships off the Albanian Coast in 1941.

Remembering Barry Lewis

Born in Netherton, Barry Lewis was a former pupil of Warwick Bolam High School and had worked as an engineer at HSBC and Alliance & Leicester Girobank in Bootle.

A devoted family man, he lived in Aintree with his wife of 31 years, Brenda, and their two sons Glen, 26, a music teacher and Matthew, 21 a student.

Mr Lewis died after suffering a heart attack while playing squash at the Elm Road club on Friday, November 14.
